#51 Mommy, why do I have three dads?

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Welcome to my very first premium episode of Ask Dr. Harriet. Today, we meet a woman who not only is one of the foremost experts on divorce and the growing phenomenon of the multiple step family, she and her husband also are part of a large blended family. Ann Ordway is a divorce lawyer in New Jersey specializing in couples mediation, communication and family counseling. The sometimes devastating ways in which divorce and re-marriage impact children is why Ann and husband Steve started Little Voices. In this episode we discuss how you know when divorce is the only alternative, and steps you can take now to prevent your relationship from reaching that point. We also delve into how divorce has evolved in society, and what that means for children growing up. Music heard on this show includes Wouldn’t It Be Nice, by the Beach Boys and It’s Your Lucky Day Now, by AJ and the Frozen Tundra Blues Band.

Womens’ Tightrope

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

Harriet KatzPersonal reactions to Hillary Clinton have been increasingly on my mind. I’m not referring to her political stances or affiliation, but rather to the organized and not so organized emotional responses to her as the first US woman to make it this close to the front door of the Oval Office. Hillary is a trailblazer. As such, she is perceived and judged differently than a man.

No matter what Hillary says, wears, or does, she provokes unending criticism. (more…)

Trust Me

Friday, January 25th, 2008

Harriet KatzIt’s campaign season again. Reminds me of the last several campaigns. If you think  political campaigns inspire trust, vote yes. If you don’t, vote no. I sure have my doubts. Broken promises. Reassuring public statements followed by private betrayals. Little accountablility. Outright lies.

Lack of trust is not limited to politics. It’s in business. Remember Enron? You see it in local communities. Public figures say one thing. Then do another. I’m concerned about the consequences on a public level. And think about the implicit permission for private relationships. If it’s OK for a celebrity to violate trust, then maybe it’s not too bad for me to sometimes act that way.

#29 – The User

Users usually want money. Yours. Or sex. Maybe you’ve dated one of these guys. Trouble is, users are not easily spotted. Often they come disguised as well-meaning relatives, or the neighbor who never seems to have whatever it is he/she is always borrowing. Users are expert manipulators. Here’s how (and when) to say NO and mean it.

One Percent for the Planet is auctioning off tons of Green goodies, including a Jack Johnson autographed guitar! Penguin Pods donated podcast consulting- go get some! All of us involved give at least 1% of all sales to environmental causes. Please join us!

Our silver anniversary show explores how the inability to “feel the pain” of another generation has some workplaces rippling with turmoil. Why can’t Boomers, GenX and GenY make nice at the office? A few companies are proactively seeking the answer. Please take our listener poll. Pretty please? I have oodles of leftover candy for ya. Here kitty, kitty.

I just heard from Sarah, an Alpha-Woman. Sarah’s in pain. Her husband John has shutdown. He hasn’t made decent money for over 6 months. Time passes. There’s no hope on the horizon.

The more time passes the less Sarah gets through to John. He disappears behind the newspaper. He hides glued to the TV. When confronted, his eyes glaze over. To add insult to injury, John does less and less around the house. He says he has no time. The more Sarah’s frustrated, the less she gets through to John.
