I’ve been thinking about conversations taking place between husbands and wives around the world since Eliot Spitzer’s betrayal of his wife Silda hit the news. Why does their problem resonate so loudly to so many? Because betrayal is more widespread than we’d like to believe. Once discovered, trust is broken. Trust is the very foundation of a relationship. The question is, can it be repaired? (more…)

For many, going off to college is an exciting adventure. But what happens when the safety nets that protected you in high school are removed, replaced by the pressure to succeed? It is quite common to feel alone, confused, fearful, often depressed. My guest is therapist Dr. Lynda Doyle who has talked with dozens and dozens of college kids from the U.S. and other countries. She tells each of them the same thing: You’re absolutely normal!

March 5th, 2008 will forever be a special day to me. Amid all the chaos and craziness in the world, our Antonia Josephine was born. Our first grandchild. Her presence reminds me of the absolute miracle of life. It makes me reflect on the gift of a new life being filled with love, joy, and peace. It also brings me back to the reality that, for many, it is the beginning of a long journey of pain.
The experts say if you were unlucky enough to have been abused or seriously troubled, there’s little chance of raising a well adjusted child. Someone who could be comfortable among the content and joyful crowd.
I’m here to tell you that you can. (more…)

Rumors have been on my mind this week. The New York Times articles on John McCain’s alleged relationship got me started. Whether these accusations are rumor or something else is not what is on my mind at the moment. They just got me to thinking about the power of a rumor. What idle speculation–unverified gossip–can do to a person.

The title of this post sounds like a disease (Ken wants to know if there’s a cure), because we - in particular, we women - can be afflicted with one form or another of this workplace malady. If it is true that GenY is driving a sea change of career attitudes and policy, why are young women still being held back? The answers are, like the subject, complex. My guest is author, journalist and career advice expert, Hannah Seligson. The book that spawned this interview is “It’s Not a Glass Ceiling, It’s a Sticky Floor,” by Rebecca Shambaugh.

Turns out that what you put out on You Tube and other places in the Citizens Media can come back to bite you in major ways. That is, according to an article in Information Week that Ken sent today.
On Blame Game we talked about employers checking out social networks. But did you know the CIA closely follows You Tube and chat rooms for “honest-to-goodness intelligence”?
These are public spaces. Postings made in public are fair game for everyone. That includes the CIA. Schools. Employers. Voyeurs. Makes me think even more about the importance of using good judgment. Necessity of managing a hot temper. And how someone you never met may interpret your words. Food for thought.

Down in the gym this morning I overheard Lola pleading with Shawn, her personal trainer. I’m losing it. Can’t do it. This is too hard. I could easily relate to her pleading. I work with Shawn on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This was her day to struggle. As I listened to Lola, my mind drifted to conversations I’ve had with clients, friends, and family. I was reminded once again that life lessons can be found in many arenas.
